Decks & Flashcards
Creating Decks
Decks are collections of flashcards organized around a topic. When creating a deck, you can:
- Give the deck a name and an optional description.
- Choose a subject to describe and filter the deck.
- Optionally select target age groups to help people find decks for their audience.
- Set the card language. Language decks can use one language or separate front and back languages.
- Enable reverse reviews to study back to front as well, when the deck format supports it.
Adding Cards
Each flashcard has a front and back side. You can enhance cards with:
- Images – Search Openverse, Pexels, or upload your own
- GIFs – Find animated GIFs with Klipy. GIF search requires Open tier or higher.
- Audio – Use text-to-speech or attach a recording to either side of a card.
- Text entry – Enter plain text on each side; the card editor has no rich-text toolbar.
Card text limits: Each card side accepts up to 500 characters.
Image-first cards: If a card has media and text on only one side, Kaboosh uses the media side as the prompt and fixes that card's study direction to preserve the pairing.
Translations are language-aware: Label deck languages, translate supported card content, and add readable transliteration where it helps.
Multi-blank cloze cards: use at least three underscores for each gap. Put one answer per gap on the opposite side in prompt order, separated by commas or line breaks. The number of answers must exactly match the number of gaps; use line breaks when an answer contains a comma.
Importing Cards
Individual, Parent, and Teacher accounts on a paid plan can import existing cards. Upload a CSV, Excel (.xlsx), or Anki (.apkg) file, map its fields, check the preview, and add the selected cards to a compatible deck.
- CSV or Excel (.xlsx) – Use .csv or .xlsx files, not legacy .xls. Map Front and Back, or map an Image URL plus text on one side; you can also map languages and supported optional card fields. Check the row preview before importing.
- Anki (.apkg) – Import a valid Anki .apkg package and choose whether to keep its scheduling intervals; this option does not import a full review log.
Navigate to Import Flashcards to upload a file, check its mapping and preview, then choose a compatible deck or create a new one.
Organizing Decks
Keep your decks organized with:
- Folders – Group related decks together
- Tags – Add keywords for easy filtering
- Search – Find decks by name, description, or tags
- Sorting – In Manage mode, reorder decks A–Z or by last updated.
Deck Settings
Each deck has configurable settings:
- Reverse Mode – Enable to practice back-to-front in addition to front-to-back
- Language Settings – Set languages for proper text-to-speech pronunciation
- Visibility – Make decks public to share with the community
Progress tracks: New Standard decks with the Languages subject default to separate Reading & writing and Listening & speaking schedules. Choose Use one progress track during creation if you want a single schedule; this setting locks after cards are added.
Front ↔ Back direction: there is a global direction toggle in the top bar (Front → Back / Back → Front). This affects Smart Tracking and some Learning Zone activities.
Reverse Mode and Smart Tracking: if a deck is not reverse-enabled, Smart Tracking may not be available in the Back → Front direction for that deck.
Cloze detection: in Deck Edit, deck owners can keep automatic detection, force the front or back to be treated as cloze, or select Never treat as cloze. This changes how activities interpret the cards; it does not rewrite their text.
Locking after you start studying: after you've started reviewing a deck, Kaboosh may lock the deck to help protect your progress. You can unlock it to edit, but changing cards can affect your learning history.
Public Decks
Discover and use decks shared by the community:
- Browse the Public Decks library by subject, language, tags, or age group
- Copy public decks to your library to customize them
- Share your own decks publicly so others can find, preview, and copy them
Publishing rules: to make a deck public, it must have at least 5 cards.
Public deck locking: When other learners use your public deck, it is locked against structural changes and card edits. Unlock it before editing; changes may reset its ratings.
Copying public decks: Free accounts can make one public-deck copy and keep up to 20 cards. Check the copy screen for any additional plan or card limits.
Learning Zone
Overview
The Learning Zone is where you practice your flashcards through different practice activities. Each activity targets different learning skills:
- P (Passive) – Recognition-based learning (e.g., multiple choice)
- C (Cued) – Recall with hints (e.g., jumbled letters)
- A (Active) – Full recall without assistance (e.g., typing answers)
For language decks, games also target specific modalities:
- R (Reading) – Visual text recognition
- L (Listening) – Audio comprehension
- W (Writing) – Typing/spelling production
- S (Speaking) – Spoken production
Four-skill language decks use two separate Smart Tracking schedules: Reading & writing and Listening & speaking. Each accepted review records one modality. Writing can support Reading, and Speaking can support Listening, without logging a second result. Decks configured to use one progress track share a single schedule.
Some activities only show decks that fit their input type.
- Switch the direction if the activity expects the other side of the card.
- Make sure the answer side has short, typable text.
Game Settings
Most games share common settings:
- Shuffle – Randomize card order
- Image display – Show/hide and position images
- Text-to-speech – Enable audio and choose voices
- Timer – Show/hide the session timer
- Fullscreen – Distraction-free mode
Games and activities
Choose Learning Zone for deck practice and creative activities, or Arcade for board, card, strategy, and action games. Available activities and modes depend on your role, plan, deck content, and device.

Cards with several blanks: Type It turns two or more recognized gap markers into numbered underlines, then shows one answer field with the matching number for each gap.
Each gap stays on its own line. If an image or several gaps make the card taller than the screen, scroll inside the activity to reach the remaining fields and Submit.
Normal hints such as [animal] or [past tense] stay visible. Reserved markers such as [blank], [gap], and supported translated equivalents are treated as gaps instead.
If the gap and answer counts do not match safely, Type It uses one ordinary answer field rather than guessing.

Smart Tracking (SRS)
What is Smart Tracking?
Smart Tracking uses spaced repetition to schedule reviews from your earlier results and retention target. Cards you recall well usually return later; difficult or forgotten cards return sooner.
How It Works
Only when a review is accepted as effective does the scheduler update its retention estimate and next review time:
- Complete a tracked review. Flashcards ask for Again, Hard, Good, or Easy; supported activities record their result automatically.
- Kaboosh estimates how likely you are to recall a card over time and uses your retention target to help decide when it is due.
- The next review is chosen to target a recall probability
- A successful review accepted as effective usually extends the interval; early or other non-effective attempts may not update it
When Smart Tracking is enabled for the deck, Study Now (Auto) chooses an eligible activity for the due track and can move from recognition through supported recall toward production. After a miss, it may offer a shorter corrective activity.
Current Retention Estimates
Each bar is a deck-wide estimate of current retrievability - the chance you could recall the cards now - for the selected study direction. It is not a completion score or permanent mastery rating.
- Unreviewed cards count as 0% in the deck-wide average
- Only reviews accepted as effective by the scheduler refresh the estimate; previews and other non-effective attempts do not
- Estimated retention decays over time as more time passes since each effective review
- Even 100% means an estimate of recall right now, not that the deck is permanently completed
Four-skill language decks display separate Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking retention estimates while keeping two schedules: Reading & writing and Listening & speaking. Writing can support Reading, and Speaking can support Listening. Writing or Speaking may be capped at 60% while a card is at the Cued skill level.
Retention displays show the same current estimate as bars, a circle, a mosaic, or a gem. You can choose your preferred style in Settings -> Learning.
For non-language decks, a single current-retention estimate is shown.
Direction matters: progress bars and scheduling use the selected Front -> Back or Back -> Front direction. Reviewing one direction does not refresh the other.
Review Scheduling
Cards progress through learning phases:
- Default same-day learning steps are 10 minutes, 1 hour, and 12 hours. Open tier and above can customize or skip them in Settings > Learning > Advanced SRS Settings.
- After a card completes its learning steps, it moves into longer scheduled reviews based on your results.
- A missed or difficult review can return a card to relearning or shorten its next interval.
For four-skill language decks, each study direction has separate Reading & writing and Listening & speaking due dates. Reviewing one track does not normally reschedule the other. One-track decks have one shared due date per direction.
On four-skill language decks, some clean first-try Type It reviews may postpone an already-due Listening & speaking review when recent speaking results and other checks make the card eligible. This changes scheduling only; it never counts as listening or speaking evidence, so keep doing direct reviews on both tracks.
Fine-Tuning SRS
Open tier and above can adjust same-day review settings in Settings > Learning > Advanced SRS Settings:
- Intraday Review Steps — Set up to five learning intervals in minutes.
- Disable Intraday Reviews — Skip short-term learning steps and move directly to daily intervals.
Progress & Achievements
Daily Goals
Set a daily review goal in Settings > Learning. Choose a preset (20, 30, 50, 80, 100, 150, or 200 reviews), enter a custom target, or turn the goal off.
Study Streaks
Study on consecutive local days to extend your daily streak. Streak milestones unlock achievements, and eligible successful reviews may earn streak XP.
Achievements & Badges
Earn badges for reaching milestones:
- Streak achievements — Reach milestones such as 3, 7, 14, or 30 consecutive study days.
- XP milestones — Earn achievements as your total XP grows.
- Cards-mastered milestones — Earn badges as more cards reach the achievement’s mastery threshold. Current retention can still change over time.
- Learning-session achievement — Complete 100 learning sessions.
View all your achievements on the Achievements page.
Leaderboards
Game leaderboards are organized by game and deck. They show score, accuracy, and completion time.
Statistics
Your Stats page shows average XP and reviews per active day, your longest streak, time spent learning, unique cards reviewed, and your correct-answer ratio.
Audio Features
Text-to-Speech
Use text-to-speech to hear supported flashcard text read aloud. Voice availability and quality depend on the selected provider and device.
- Pronunciation follows the language set for the card or deck.
- Premium TTS offers male, female, or mixed voices; Browser TTS uses voices available on your device.
- Adjust speaking rate when using Browser TTS.
- In Flashcard settings, choose which side to read and whether to play audio automatically.
Audio Settings
In Flashcard settings, enable TTS, choose Browser or Premium TTS, select which side to read, and set the available voice and rate options. Other games have their own sound-effect and music controls where supported.
Teacher Features
Teacher Dashboard
Use the Teacher area to manage students, classes, and assignments. Teaching Tools also brings together Homework, Progress & Reports, Writing feedback, Student Writing, Presenter, AI Text Generation, Printables, and Teaching Sessions.
Managing Students
Add students one at a time or import a CSV, then manage their sign-in credentials and individual progress. To connect a student's family, open that student's profile and create a parent invite code; students do not need email to sign in.
Creating Classes
Create classes, add students, and assign class decks from Classes. Class limits depend on your plan. Class review settings update each student's overall review profile, not a schedule specific to that class.
Assignments
Use Assignments to give activities or decks to selected students or a class, set deadlines and activity options, and review completion or submissions. The options available depend on the assignment type.
Shareable assignment links are available on paid plans for supported activities such as Flashcards, Type It, Speak It, and Quiz. Set a login requirement or expiry date, share the link, then open its submission report to review results.
In Homework, assign a Kaboosh activity, attach a worksheet or resource, or write instructions for selected students with a due date. Students can submit text or files; review their submissions and leave feedback from the assignment.
Progress Tracking
Choose a student or class and a date range to review learning activity, retention estimates, and assignment completion. Export an activity report as a PDF when you need a shareable record.
PDFs, printables, feedback, and reports
Open Teaching Tools to prepare lesson materials and review student writing:
- Presenter: upload a PDF or PowerPoint file, or open a story or student writing. Present pages, annotate content, and turn selected words into flashcards.
- Printables: choose a deck and worksheet template, adjust the options, then preview and download the PDF. You can also assign it as homework. Included with Teacher Open.
- Writing feedback: paste a draft or upload images, review the suggested marks and comments, edit the feedback, and save a PDF or create a revision assignment.
Teaching Mode
Use Prep Mode to test activities, or select a student or class for guided teaching.
- To plan or test, click an activity in Prep Mode and choose “I’m just testing or planning.” This does not start a teaching session or change student progress.
- To teach, click an activity and choose “Assign a target.” In Teaching Setup, choose a student or class and mark class attendance.
- Enable “Include SRS tracking” only when student records should update, then choose Continue.
Parents and families
Connect your children
Create a home child account for a learner who is not managed by a teacher. For an existing school student, ask the teacher for an invite code from the student's profile, then enter it in your Parent Dashboard. A teacher-linked student does not use a home-account slot.
Set practice and follow progress
Select a linked child to review due cards, recent activity, points, and homework. Use Create or Find Decks to prepare practice and assign it to linked children. Homework shows due dates, attachments, submission status, and teacher feedback. Open Reports for recent activity and suggested next practice.
Rewards and home play
Create rewards with point costs and approve redemption requests. Set home Arcade time limits and game access in Controls, open Inbox for family notices and weekly digest preferences, or choose Play Together for shared activities.
Student Features
Student Login
Students sign in on the Student Login page with a username and password provided by a teacher or parent. Student accounts do not need an email address.

Connected AI (MCP)
Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets compatible AI apps use specific Kaboosh tools. Connected AI is available only to eligible Individual and Teacher accounts on Open, Pro, or Academy; Free accounts cannot connect an AI app.
Open Settings -> Connected AI, copy the server address below, and add it in your AI app. When Kaboosh opens the connection request, check the app details and return address, choose the permissions you want to grant, then approve or deny it. You do not enter a Kaboosh password or API key in the AI app.
MCP server address: https://mcp.kaboosh.app/mcp
With approved permissions, an AI app can page and search your owned decks and cards, revise private deck details, organize folders, preview and privately copy public decks, add moderated images, GIFs, or short silent MP4s, show due and needs-work cards, and read or update your own profile picture after confirmation. Teachers can also work with private worksheet drafts, minimized authorized progress, and confirmed written or Flashcards homework.
Teacher progress and homework tools require an eligible paid Teacher account and the matching permissions. Reporting-context, folder-move, profile-picture, and homework changes use a fresh preview: the AI must show it and wait for your explicit confirmation in a later step before applying it. Reporting context changes summaries only; it never grants teaching access.
Connected AI requires an internet connection. You can review or revoke an app’s access at any time.
